Population in my Eastern side has been pretty bad for the last 10-15 years, although it's getting better. There are more birds in northern and Western Iowa. Most people in Iowa still make trips to South Dakota for the dream pheasant hunting.

My 7 year old got it done the other day. His first deer, one shot one kill. Pretty proud dad here.

Thanks its a big part of our family traditions as well as lake time. He helped cut it up, we made jerky and dried meat and the rest will be made into sausage next weekend.

I shot 2 does last night with the bow, for the last night of the season. I hit the bigger one a little back right before dark, so I let it go overnight. Found it this morning after a 5 minute search, but unfortunately, the coyotes found it before me. They decimated it and it was a total loss.

I knew my shot wasn't a good one, so I didn't want to bump it off it's bed if I looked too early. I knew I missed heart and lungs, so an hour wait isn't long enough. I was worried about missing the liver and only getting guts. I ended up hitting liver, so it might have been dead after an hour, but even that is pushing it.
