Engine trouble on indmar 351

Heres my story and input would help greatly.

I have a 1990 Tristar with a 351 indmar. Last year it ran perfectly until about the end of the season. One day I backed the boat in the water and it started right up however when I backed it into idle and the motor died. I was able to get it running by adjusting the throttle needle on the side of the carb. Fast foward to this year I attempted to start the boat for the first time and it will turn over and start then immediately die. I've cleaned the carb and partial rebuild. After this it would run but I would have to have it idle at 900-1000 RPM and nothing but smoke blowing everywhere. The spark plugs and wires were replaced last year, So I've cleaned those off and now looking for advice on where to search now.

Do you know when the water separator was changed last?

The wife calls me abrasive
The kids call me Daddy Sweetwater
But the ladies, they just call me El Guapo

If you have a lot of smoke you are probably too rich. Idle mixture screws should be at 1.5 turns out (roughly) assuming everything else is correct. You may have a blown power valve. Did it backfire through the carb last fall or this Spring? The carb on your boat probably doesn't have the update to prevent a backfire form taking the power valve with it. You may be in need of a full rebuild including a proper cleaning. This may have started as clogged idle circuit passages.

The last day of the season two years ago my boat ('91) wouldn't idle. With enough throttle it would keep running and we were able to get it from the boat lift to the trailer. Pretty sure the choke was just stuck closed, so that was easy once we figured it out.

Old gasoline can be the problem. When I bought my 86 Mastercraft 3 years ago I was to get a test drive in the boat. Previous owner had it running for 10 minutes at high idle to let it warm up and all of a sudden it quit. Would not start again. The problem was bad gasoline. Old gasoline.

Sounds rich, stuck choke?
Keep a tight line, and a smile on your face. Peace out.
