I used to use a product called LPS III. LPS I is like WD-40, LPS II is a little thicker,but LPS III is a thick brown goop. When I ran boats in saltwater I always sprayed the back of dashboards,wire connectors,items in the engine compartment like trim pumps, with LPS III. It did a great job of sealing out the salt air and water. I've never used it on freshwater boats.
