Hey guys I know this is an old post, but I have a 95 ski brendella with a velvet direct drive. It started to slip gears on me very recently. I found out that when the velvet is low on fluid it will not properly engage the internal clutch. I was also concerned that the transmission fluid appeared to be regular motor oil. After some research I decided to go with ATF. A couple hours into running it it started to make what felt like grinding noises, when I pulled the cowling back it appeared that oil had been spraying from somewhere, and the ATF in the tranny appeared milky and low.what do you guys think the most likely culprit is? I know this is a long shot and I am sure I look like an idiot in more than one way, but my boat is down, and true help will be hugely appreciated.

Did you check the condition of the heat exchanger? Also check the easy stuff for leaks, like fittings and hoses.
