View Full Version : Steering has gone awry...

Question for a friend:

He has a 2002 Xstar (which is the original X2 setup). When driving above 5-8 mph his steering wheel starts to pull hard to the right and gets exponentially worse as he speeds up. He says that if he let go of the wheel at 30 mph the boat would absolutely spin out.

Any ideas??

check rudder - see if it's loose at all or damaged... some pull to right is normal..

Everything is secure. This isn't a "some pull"... it's a "we'll be up on the rocks if I let go".

We can't figure it out for the life of us.

Without a visual, can't really say. I will say this though; start at the wheel and trace the entire steering system to the rudder. Like Mike said, something is loose or damaged. Make sure the connection at the rudder is tight inside the boat.
Good Luck

Look at your fins, prop, and rudder. Have someone hold your rudder and turn the steering wheel to see if its loose.

Thanks for the advice. Good idea to start at the wheel and work our way to the rudder.
