View Full Version : XStar - Surfing with a wedge?

I'm sure this has been hashed before -- but I'm in the market for a new (to me) boat. Have a line on an X-Star that seems to fit my needs. However, I'm hearing that some have had difficulty attaching a surf wedge to the transom based on the design of the of the hull.

Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks!

GSA = Go Surf Assist system which adds "wake shaping devices" or trim tabs to your hull to shape the wave. System runs about $4K and simulates the MC Gen 2 surf system quite well. Check out wakemakers.com

GSA kit = $4000

Surf Wedge = $200

Is it not possible to attach a wedge to an XStar?

$200 youll never get back, while attaching a suction cup to your expensive boat.

4k that youll get back, making your boat easier to sell and much easier to surf.

I cant argue about how good gsa is and that it will add value to a boat but there's no way any sort of $4k add-on will get its money back on resale.

We just traded in our 25 with GSA. We got nearly every penny out of what we spent on it.

Back on topic -- :)

I'm in the market to buy an XStar this weekend -- my budget (aka-my wife) won't allow me to buy a boat at max budget, then turn around and put $4k into a GSA.....unless one of you guys have a place for me and my boat to live :)

In all seriousness -- I assume I'm not the first guy that considered putting a swell/wedge on a Star.

they have. I know Corbin has one for his 40th. are you just surfing?

I had good luck last summer with a homemade wedge using the suction cup handle from northern tool.

Yes you can.. look up the diy wake shaper thread.. "bet on black" has the bobv5 and it's the best solution for a surfing an 03-11 x star minus go surf assist..

I have one I'll try to post a picture later

My previous boat was an X1 -- (my first MC).....kids are 12, 10 and 8 and are wanting to learn to surf, so they are inexperienced. An XStar is a good choice for the family and friends, given the room inside and in the bow. I won't need a world class wake, and thinking that stock ballast (or adding to it) along with a wedge would make a nice surf wake for the kids. They all currently wakeboard.

It's doable. Here's the one I made for a buddy's '04 XStar. Didn't get many runs with it last year, but looking to do a little more R&D on that hull chine this season.

Check out the DIY wake shaper thread in the watersports/wakesurfing section. Plenty of ideas in there.

Bet on Black actually has an Xstar so the BobV5 was really developed using that hull and I know he consistently uses his.

You will not be able to surf an xstar, or any boat of that generation with stock weight.

Also, I'm curious how much you've shopped around. I own an xstar, but that's because all we do is wakeboard. It takes serious weight to get the wake to peak up like you're probably used to on the X1, and for 22 fters go it's the smallest interior out there.

If you don't need a older pro caliber wakeboard wake, an X15 or X30 would be better choices

Just a reminder it's not only a cost difference between a suction wedge and a surfing system but more importantly it's the quality of the wave and amount of energy the wave has to surf on.

Yes, a wedge or home made suck gate will help shape the wake for surfing but it is not in the same league as a Gen 2 or GSA type system is as far as wave "energy" or push as many call it. The wedge directs some of the wave energy out to the side of the boat while a GSA system directs the mass of water down and under the surf side wave causing it to get larger and more firm (insert dirty joke here 8p). The wave may look the same with a wedge device but the GSA/Gen 2 wave typically has a significant increase in wave energy that "pushes" you along on the surf board much better.

Also a wedge device directly affects how your boat manuvers at low speeds when picking up your downed surfer or trying to dock your boat. The wedge makes it difficult to turn away from the wedge like dragging an anchor so you must think about that or whoever is driving your boat.

I have tried both and the increased push of a surf system is something you notice immediately and won't forget. People know it and will pay more for a used boat with a surf system on it so you do get a lot of you money back when selling. Any boat without one is at a noticable disadvantage on the used market these days.

Just something to consider. :)

Works wonders. Attaches to the lower part that is recessed in. Make you own for 30 bucks and call it good!

X45 sounds like it would fit your needs far better than an X-Star... heck, even an X2 will most likely be better.

I read the below threads, but I too will get divorced if I spend another $4000 on a surf system. Which after market Wedge will work for a 2006 X Star..? Thank's for all of the suggestions..:):)

Under Wakesurfing, find the thread DIY WAKeSURF SHAPER. I can post link if needed. BoBv5 is what you're looking for. You can build for roughy $40-$50 or buy the pieces from Bet on Black for a small fee and assembly yourself. Made a vast difference to my '04 Xstar wake. Takes a few times to figure out placement and weighting. All part of the fun though. Give it a try before you drop 4K.

Ummm I'm not sure comparing the $4K GSA vs. the knock offs is a fair comparison. The way I've been working it w/my significant other & COO is $4K for the GSA vs $40K to upgrade the boat to one that just works out of the box :D

Good Luck, as everyone has stated if the GSA is out of the question, then you might check out the other boats folks have mentioned here which are much better equipped for that Surf option...We're all in the same boat at the end of day. Dreaming...woh woh woh...dreaming!

Ghetto gate on my 08 xStar. Wake is awesome.. does not have the "push" like my buddy's NXT with Gen2 though

Goofy side.. temperamental.. but when she does.. wake looks great

Exactly, the point to note here is the look of a wave is not all there is when determining if a wave has great "push" or not. Basically don't judge a book by its cover applies here. It's the actual wave energy that moves you along not the look of the wave that is important.

However what is most important is to make the best with what you have and have fun on the water. A suction cup wake device will make a very noticable improvement and would be a great place to start. :)

true, I don't really mind it too much.

However I do have an idea for when I reupholster the locker and engine pad(compartment tops). I was thinking about not putting vinyl on the engine lid, but instead beefing it up and putting sea dek or gator step on it.

Anyone ever done this instead of going back with vinyl and cushion?

Agarabaghi did that on his old X1. From pics I saw, it looked good. I know thatís a different boat, but the sun deck is relatively the same between those two boats. I would do it to mine if it ever needs to be reupholstered.
