The project has begun. This will be a project in motion as I will be using the boat as she's being restored. Here's a short list of immediate needs. I need help and quick answers from people with first hand precise knowledge and personal experience.
1) best oil to use in 310 HP Indmar 350 predator engine? I've always run Valvoline 20w50 racing oil in my previous boats, will that work for this engine?
1a) what oil filter?
2) transmission fluid for Hurth 1:5-1 powerslot?
2a) who has replaced the transmission filter in their Hurth powerslot and what's part number?
3) impeller replacement part number?
4) any advice for non working gauges? This is my first boat with all electronic gauges. None of the gauges work except for the hour meter and the perfect pass comes on but does not work. Are there any other options I can do, possible to go to analog gauges for engine temp and speedometer?
5) where to buy new rub rail?
6) decals for 03 197? I typically like to stay with the factory look but I do like the chrome raised letters a lot. Not sure I want to drop $700 tho.

Also, is there anything I should know about the 197 that is going to be different than my previous 91 and 96 Prostar 190's?

Rotela 15w 40
1a) what oil filter? Can't remember but get it online. wix or napa gold
2) transmission fluid for Hurth 1:5-1 powerslot? ATF I believe. At least that's what the 1-1 runs.
2a) who has replaced the transmission filter in their Hurth powerslot and what's part number? Nope.
3) impeller replacement part number? Call ski dim they will hook you up.
4) any advice for non working gauges? This is my first boat with all electronic gauges. None of the gauges work except for the hour meter and the perfect pass comes on but does not work. Are there any other options I can do, possible to go to analog gauges for engine temp and speedometer? More than likely you need a new medallion control module. Check all the connections first.
5) where to buy new rub rail? Could most likely pick it up at any marine retailer.
6) decals for 03 197? I typically like to stay with the factory look but I do like the chrome raised letters a lot. Not sure I want to drop $700 tho. Check out Great Lakes skipper. On their site and on eBay. If your can't find it there domed numbers can make them for you.

Also, is there anything I should know about the 197 that is going to be different than my previous 91 and 96 Prostar 190's? Dunking the nose comes to mind.

I would defer to Discount Inboard Marine http://www.skidim.com/ or Indmar recommendations for 1-3. Regarding the # 4 and the nonfunctional gauges. I have a friend with an 05 197. His gauges failed in a similar manor to yours, all gauges failed and PP sort of worked without a display. A bad ground was suspect but eventually the gauges where all replaced under warranty. I would see if you could get the gauges from the 190 that had been parted out after somebody smashed a speed boat into it. Otherwise conversion to analog gauges maybe a good long term low maintenance highly reliable option. Good luck with the project, seems you have a solid boat to begin your work on. Jamie

15W40 for both engine and transmission. Impeller from skidim (http://www.skidim.com/prodinfo.asp?number=RP061018).

I'd clean the flame arrestor...pretty sure it should be silver, not black.

There are drip-mold decals like yours that have chrome in the middle instead of white. They were used on '01-02 boats a lot and can still be had from many dealers ($70-120 each side, depending on your dealer). It's a much cheaper option than the raised plastic ones on the current boats.

Looks like a fun project!

Watch the low nose on the 197. Coming around to pick up your skier she tends to nose stab the wake more than other models. It resulted in a few flooded bows and soaked passengers when we first got ours. I had moved up from a 1983 so the open bow was an adjustment.

Hammer, thanks for the reply. I've been following your rebuild and am considering the same color interior. Great job on the X45.

I appreciate the comments VTJC. I found a great deal for a pair of impellers here,

http://www.marineenginedirect.com/servlet/the-117/Two-Pack-of-Johnson/Detail?no_redirect=true

The 01 yard yacht has different gauges and speedos, I checked. I found newer used gauges but I don't really want to buy unless I have too.

Good one on the arrestor, it was good for a much needed laugh.

Does anyone know a dealer that may have the old drip mold chrome 01-02 decals at their dealer? I called Rambo Marine today with no luck. Also, what's the best way to get the current lettering off? Who has done this with success? Removing the letters from my old 96 was a nightmare!

My first inboard was an 89 Supra Conbrio. It was an open bow that sloped similar to the 197 only worse. It takes a little getting used to but it can be fun as well when you take a dip to cool the people riding in the bow.

What's the best way to get the rub rail insert back into the channel? Two places the rail is out. I plan to replace but I'd like to get it back in until I can find a new one.

Also these are the filter and oil I used on the 96 350 275 HP 190. Will they work with the 310 HP Predator engine?

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/04/ry9erube.jpg

Mike, can you hook me up with 2 of these POWERSLOT decals?

Either get out in the sun or use a hair dryer to heat the rail insert. Then I use a plastic putty knife or similar to work it back in the rail. Once you get the hang of it it goes in fairly easy.

Impellers arrived yesterday. 2 for $65 delivered in less than 48 hours all the way from California is a great deal.

I found the 03 owners manual online and not sure this is the best prop for my engine trans combo. Owners manual says 14x20. This prop is brand new only in water for the water test. Anyone have any advice on this?

Thanks Peter, I've actually known about Taco for a while. Saw a few threads here on people replacing their rails. Do you know if you can buy direct from Taco or are they just a distributor?

What RPM's are you running at with that prop?

Sodar, I have no idea. I haven't had the boat on the water except for the pre purchase water test. And none of the gauges work anyway. I just observed the prop size as I was looking through the 03 owners manual. I just received the impeller yesterday and was planning on changing that and the oil before I do anything. I really need to know what transmission fluid to go with and what oil and filter other people are using with the 350 310HP Predator with the 1.5:1 Powerslot.

Thanks ProTourX9, I'll check into those. I need a complete package.
