Anyone ever ski behind boats and have an opinion on the engine location and weight shift? I am interested in the difference in wakes for slalom primarily. Thanks!

X14 would be the preferred boat for slalom skiing as it's based off of the 197 hull. The 14V is decent but not as good as the DD version. Others that have skied behind and own can chime in too for you.....

I haven't ski'd them both, but owned 2 DD's and tested the 14V when it was released in late '09. The DD has a better wake at least from my perspective in the boat and from all I've read online. But to me the interior is much more spread out and there is more practical room for people than the V drive. I know a lot of people don't see it that way. Hulls are identical as far as I know. Difference is weight and engine placement.

Thanks guys, good info and my hunch too. I owned a PS197 for a while but now looking for some ability to make big wakes for the kids but still want a good slalom wake for me. I think I will lean towards the DD as that is what I love and will always wonder if "I should of". I think the tradeoff of larger room inside isn't worth the wake difference to me personally; a lot of people would disagree. Thanks guys, good to hear from someone objective who has test drove both. Appreciate it.

Agree with JohnE...for me it's about the interior, when comparing the 14 and 14V.

i've been on both, barefoot and skiing ... X14 is slightly better.. for me I don't like the look of the X14V back seats

We own a 214 DD and love it, but are serioulsy considering upgrading to a newer X14V.

That's a beautiful '08 214. I don't think a 14V would be an upgrade except for having ZO. PM me if you decide to upgrade. I could be interested in yours depending on the timing.

Slalom behind my 14dd. Excellent at 31-32 mph. Surf with weight and Inland Surfer Red Rocket (a must). Have not tried a 14v. Do my own work on the boat and after working on a buddies X30 the dd is a deal breaker for me. My back, knees, knuckles and arms take a beating on the X30 just doing same simple tasks on the 14dd. Plenty of space for play and work to keep her running.

If slalom is a priority, get the DD version without hesitation. I own a ps214 and tested teh x14v before it bought it. There's no comparison at 30mph, 15-22 off. Even though the hulls are identical, they ski completely different, with the V having the typical "plateau" wake that you see on all other v drives where it has a distinct step up and down on either side that upsets the ski twice per cut. This ruined it for me as someone who's on the steep slalom learning curve.

I also had my dealer add a wake plate to my 214dd. It certainly helps at 30mph to have it down, less so at 32-34. I also keep about 60-70# in the nose to tune the wake a bit. This also made a noticeable improvement, especially at 22 off.
