Could be ATF, could be 15w-40 engine oil.

Mastercraft had some complaints about "rattling" in the V-Drive transmissions at idle, and worked with Indmar and Hurth to find a solution. They published a service advisory saying that if you had an objectionable rattle, switching to motor oil would help to resolve it.

This should cover the majority of what you need to know.

In an effort to reduce the gear rattle noise at low RPM; the transmission manufacturer has
suggested that we change from the current Dexron 3 transmission fluid that we use in the
transmission to 15W40 motor oil. This is the same oil that we recommend for use in the engine
and its higher viscosity helps “dampen” the contact of the gears and reduces the noise
significantly.
Indmar has started using 15W40 Pennzoil Marine Motor Oil in all reduction gears starting with
engine IC985313. Those units will be identified with a Pennzoil 15W40 Marine Oil sticker on the
transmission in place of the ATF sticker that was previously attached.

Is your dealer smarter than Indmar? There's absolutely no reason to go outside the engine recommendations.

Run 15w-40 in the engine and tranny (makes life easier). Delo and Rotella make great oils, and there are excellent boutique oils also. Even 15w-40 consumer oils from Valvoline, Quaker State, Pennzoil, etc., are fine. If running an expensive oil makes you feel better, feel free to run a synthetic.

15w-40 for the tranny. Delo, Rotella, Royal Purple, etc. Any marine/diesel grade 15w-40 will work.

I use Rotella 15w40 in engine and tranny. It's awesome because I can get it at wal-mart in 5 qt and 1qt.

+1 for Rotella T 15W40. Always...for a decade.

15w40 is the oil of choice and can also be used in the trans. I won't get into the synthetic vs non Syn debate as those with much more knowledge on the subject have hashed it out many of times on here. Go with what's stamped on the book.

1000 hrs with Shell Rotella 15w40 standard oil changed at the intervals in the tranny and in my engine without a hiccup.

It means read the manual!

the manual is usually generic and not worth a crap,,, but i did read the one posted, and learned a lot. The one that came with my boat sucks. Looks like it was printed in 1940! And thanks for clarifying that, duh, i deserved it.

I agree the MC manuals are pretty vague, but it is kinda clear on what oil to use on which years. It does take some deciphering. :)

You have the same Vdrive/trans as me. It takes 15w40 just like the manual states. Same stuff you use in the engine.
