Curious if anyone has any home remedies or good wive's tales worth trying for wasps. The red-bodied, black-winged variety.

Seems like half the known population in TN hangs out at our cabin.

Thanks in advance for any wisdom & tips.

Let me know when you find the answer, these bastards are hard to kill!
Best I've found is staying on top of them with spray early on and keeping other bugs under control because they feed on other pests.

Let me give you some first hand advise. Wasp spray, wasp spray, and wasp spray some more.

If you burn them, smash them, swat them, hit them, or step on them, etc just expect a lot more to show up. They have this hormone that attracts more of them when you kill them with anything other than spray. Somehow it is released and within 2-3 days expect 5x more than you killed before this started.

not a remedy, but, last summer we found some small tennis racquet devices that were battery powered that would zap a bug on contact. it made killing them more fun and almost a sport for the kids.

You might want to look into getting some bat houses. I did a quick search on the web and found a couple of sites that said bats eat wasps. I read it on the internet, so it has to be true.:D

Seriously, worth a shot and even if the bats don't eat the wasps they will definitely knock down the rest of the insect population.

Here is a link to where you can buy bat houses. The guy that makes these is on another forum that I am on. He knows his stuff about bats. You could give him a call and see if he knows specifically about bats feeding on wasps.

Bats are good for many annoying insects and the are pretty cool to watch in the evening as they come out. For wasp, try throwing a cup of water with Dawn dish washing detergent mixed in.. some how it paralyzes them and they drop to the ground. It is my understanding that the soapy water causes them to suffocate.

I have never seen wasp this bad. I have killed at least 100 in the past month.

Much more fun watching your late night videos with the homemade flame thrower and the broom... and lets not forget the commentary and the running away from the swarms...

What Kyle said...."wasp spray".

Don't waste your time trying to kill them one at a time...you have to get them when they are in the nest. Wasps and Yellow Jackets will return to the same yard/house year after year unless you kill the whole nest. Find the nest, then wait until dark and they will all be in/on the nest. Hit them with the wasp spray and it will kill them instantly.

We have Yellow Jackets in VA that build their nests in the ground. You don't find them until you run over them with the lawn mower. Wait until dark, pour about a cup of gasoline in the hole....no more Yellow Jackets. After getting stung over 20 times (at once) one day, I did a lot of research on the little boogers.

I would look on Craigslist for bee catchers or what ever they are called to come and get them. My sister had a hornets nest the size of 2 basketballs. Dude came out and took care of business for $75. If you do kill them don't leave them laying around clean them up and dispose of them.

You can also call college's that will come out and get them. They use the venom they extract for anti venom.

European wasps are brilliantly destroyed by this:

30 milliliters (yes about a tablespoon) of fipronel insecticide mixed with 1 litre of water mixed through 1kg of wallaby mince (or other smelly mince). Handle with care including gloves while you mix it and throw away mixing bowl and spoon after

Get three 2 litre plastic milk bottle and cut big square holes in the sides. Leave 1" (25mm) of space at the bottom for mince. Hang these around in the shade. To text them from drying out. Do this on a sunny day when the wasps are active.

Even better if you feed the wasps for a day or three before with untainted (no poison) mince so they all come to you to feed.

A few wasps will die on the spot. Most will get back to the nest. Within 3 days every nest within a mile will be dead!!

Whatever poison you use for your particular wasps needs to be slow enough for the wasps to get it back to the nest first then strong enough to kill them all. Around here they are born faster than you could ever swat them.
