I searched but did not find.

Is there an engine compartment thread anyone has bookmarked?

I'm out of town (no contribution just this sec), but would love to see what folks have 'under the hood' as it were, complete with upgrades / improvements.

Need some ideas / inspiration for winter projects.

Thanks!

Detailed the motor last winter (new valve covers, etc) and replaced all the hoses, belts, impeller, etc, etc, etc. Now has a new air filter. This winter I am looking at possibly new plug wires (green - boat is a green over green S&S), cap, rotor, electronic ign, coil, etc.

Here are a few pics of mine toward the end of the top end rebuild. Blew a HG, also managed to crack a head. Got a set of GT40 heads from a junkyard for cheap, decided to paint them Ford Blue. Got a sizeable bump in HP, must have been the paint! Prev owner converted to EI. Not nearly as clean as some of the others on here, that's for sure.

I found my 87 ProStar in the back of a used car lot with a leaking head gasket but it ran great. Pulled the motor in the winter and replaced all gaskets, repainted & used stainless hardware. I traded it in at a dealership in Michigan a few years ago and I have no idea who owns it now. I hope they've kept it clean! It's a darker blue but it was a cheap camera.

Nice motor! Love the dashboard too, and the interior looks very clean. Nice boat!

Thx! Refresh of the Dash was also done last year. Dash sticker is original. Steering wheel is a replacement from Speedway Motors, polished all the aluminum and chrome, Switches, knobs, ign sw have been replaced with new brass ones and chrome knobs. And while I was at it I realized the fuse block was junk/repaired poorly with solder globs and replaced that with a modern Blue Sea systems (along with all the under dash wiring) Control knob is refinished to match the wheel. Replaced the speedo lenses (were cracked) Last on the list was to replace the tach (stopped working). I guess I accomplished a lot over the winter in my spare time. Seat is out (and why you have such a good view of the dash) because I replaced all the wood... (and gave be excellent access under the dash to rewire) Interior was done by the PO before I bought it (not sure when). I just cleaned the ell out of it and protected it with conditioner.

Demoman trumps mine tho! (Although mine was detailed in the engine bay where it sat without a rebuild... ) I am just happy that it (motor) so far has stayed nice though use (although limited) this season. The carpet you see that isnt attached is cheap scrap carpet from home depot to protect the actual carpet during updates, detailing, improvements.

Big winter to do list again this year if budget/time allows. Its a good distraction and a fun break when the winter rebuild of the racecar isnt going as well as I like...

You should hear it. Makes a nice rumble all the way up to about 2,600 rpm. But push it up to 3,400 rpm and above and it's eerily quiet.

And the intake manifold is silver. :)

Hey, two questions on your motor.

Does the fuel system have a return line?

Is there an o2 used?

I just recently started thinking about an open loop EFI for the 351s.

Hey, two questions on your motor.

I just recently started thinking about an open loop EFI for the 351s.

Tim I have friends with "Naughty Girls" and I know they do not have O2 sensors or any kind of emission control. Keep in mind the engine pic above would be say '98-2000? All of the PCM engines I deal with are out of 3 different '98 "Naughty Girls".

The fuel I do believe has a return back to the tank. The canister with PCM on it has a pump and a filter in it. There is also a secondary pump above that pump. I can't remember off the top of my head what the fuel rail looks like on the intake but there are 2 hoses that run to the canister. I believe that 1 is a return.

Hope this is a help to you

The above comments are correct for all PCM GT40's (1995-2002).

I believe only recent cat motors have O2 sensors from the factory.

It is not too difficult to add a plate between the riser and manifold with an O2 bung installed if you want to install a wideband O2 and tune A/F ratios- be it carb or EFI.

Thanks Kyle, TR

Not to derail this thread but it does sound like an interesting project for sure.

I don't know a lot about Ford's automotive EFI systems but I bet there is something out there that could be converted to Marine use that would be safe and affordable.

I'm doing some wide band tuning right now so I just starting thinking about the early model 351s so we'll see where it leads. I need a winter project.

I did get a little performance boost with the roller rockers and the exhaust risers. I was looking for a little more top end for barefooting. I ended up getting about an extra 1 mph on the top end. It wasn't enough so I bought at 2008 with the LY6.

Yes, there is a return off the Fuel Control Cell (FCC). There are also two fuel pumps, a high pressure and a low pressure, one of which (I think the low pressure) is inside the FCC. No O2 sensor.

/edit. Whoops, Tim has covered it already.

Yeah, I'm just wondering if there could be a low cost EFI conversion for the older motors. The problem with a BLM is needing a dry exhaust for the o2 or it would have to run open loop. If it's more then say $400 or $500 then it probably wouldn't be worth it to most folks.

Buying in a kit form, the options are pretty expensive (even if you factor in selling the carb).

Hence the $400 or $500 limit.

It's gonna take some researching and time to see what is out there and what can be converted to work. My trouble right now is 100% of my research and tuning has been on GM stuff but the concept remains the same.;)

Once I get the new front axle done for my suburban I'll start looking at older model Ford EFIs. Would be nice to find a low pressure returnless system on a small block that was plentiful.

It's purposely loose for two reasons. I had taken the belt off so I could clean up rust from the alternator pulley and paint it, and then I left it loose to prevent it from taking a set over the looong cold Indiana winter. It was actually off the pulley completely but I slipped it in place to take the photo. ;)

A winter job I did a few years ago on my old boat, 2003 PS 197 with the MCX. I installed 1.6 ratio roller rockers and a set of ETX manifolds that I had polished.
I'm liking this a lot - When my Muff's are do on the 04-209 - I'll PM for Pt numbers for rockers - Very Nice - Definitely My Style.

I took a lot of heat for criticizing the new Ilmor engines for looking drab or like a diesel out of an old cruiser. While very functional we pay a lot of cash for those engine upgrades I personally don't thing we're asking too much for a little flair for all that cash. Those corvette, MCX and older power slot engines always bring a smile when you open the engine cover. Love seeing others dressing up their engines here.

Anyone replace the "insulation" or the crappy foam surround under the motor cover?

Ours on the project 190 is bad and I want to replace it...Post #93 in this thread shows the only pic with aftermarket insulation.

I checked at Menards and found the basic silver insulation which is VERY thin but was not sure how to even attach this to the motor cover if I went this route...

Last thing I want it for it to fall down on the motor when it is running and be cut to a million pieces...

Any suggestions?

It is a home-made 383 cu in with aluminum heads and aluminum indmar EXT exhaust manifolds. A close to stock cam and a little toying with the throttle body and it has been running great for 180 hrs. Probably a little leaner than stock -used to always have black around the exhaust ports but not anymore.

Looking good, nice distributor btw

Thanks! I gave my self a 5% chance to get it running after all the changes and figured I would need someone to help me get it going but once I adjusted the firing order (was one plug wire off); I barked right up (only took about an hour to figure it out, get fuel to the carb get it to bark, then shut it down right away). Too many changes all at once presented lots of variables/unknowns which may have prevented a start....

Now just need to run it up to temp on the fake lake; and time it; and see if I have eliminated the stumble out of the hole (for those who didnt know....old distributor springs were gone {one missing; one rotten} and I tried for awhile to get em right using off the shelf parts worked well at speed but hesitated out of the hole making getting up tough... and finally gave up and just replaced the whole unit.)
