I've never released the winch strap before in the water just for that reason. How much time do you save and is it worth the risk? I think not.

My brother released the winch strap on a glass fishing boat 20' from the water the first time after he changed from a bunk trailer to a roller trailer. Motor and stern of boat hit the launch. Not as bad as it sounded, but it didn't help anything.

Having an older boat I always get it in the water and start it before unhooking. Takes a lot less time to do that than it does to push it back to the trailer and load it by hand if it ever didn't start.

That said it has always started so far.........

Didn't quite make it to the launch apparently. Blocked freeway traffic today on 131. Not a lot of details.

At the ramp on the last day of our vacation and a father and daughter were launching their 21' cuddy-cabin. The 12 yr old daughter was in the boat when the strap gave way 15' from the water and it rolled of their EZ Loader. 30 some odd people stood around, laughed and took photos. The daughter was scared and crying after she took the ride of her life. My son, myself and another gentleman helped them get the boat back onto the trailer. Very sad and disappointing to see other boaters not lookin out/helping other boaters. My 18 year old son was pissed and said he's never seen so many jerks in one place!
