my main concern is if there is actually a cavity under there that would make a good locker, or if i'd cut the floor out only to find it completely solid underneath and now i just have a shallow hole in my floor.

I have seen brochure pictures of some of the boats part way through assembly. This would be perfect if you could come up with it.
