The 85 Stars and Stripes, end of a classic era

I'm looking at an 85 S&S as a project. Did all 85 models have the fiberglass stringers? I'm also curious as to what models had the textured glass deck? Can anyone comment on the ski wake of the 85 and overall handling of an 85. I've owned 91, 96 Prostar 190's, and currently have an 03 197. Im guessing the ski wake won't compare to any of those but will it still perform in the course? Anything I should look for specifically other than the obvious?

Yes, all 85 's have fiberglass stringers , the switch over was mid year 83. You need to go to pre 80's to get the textured deck.
Also, 85's do not have metal flake.

I skied lots behind an 82 when I was younger. Likely pretty much the same wake as the 85 -- the hull design didn't change much in those years. The S & S's are lighter boats than their successors, so that made it easy to achieve a flat wake at 32+. The newer hulls 190 and 197's have the advantage of better spray control -- skiing an S & S at shortline lengths can be like standing in a sandblasting booth!

x2 on the spray. Also the 22 bump might be a little harder. The ride is definitely harder.

15 off- decent wake as long as it's not loaded with passengers
22 off- large bump in center of wake
28 off- wake .... What wake?
From then on you start getting more and more spray, all in all good boat. A good bit smaller, especially on the inside, than newer boats. Drives like a go-cart with glue on the tires. Very good handling, at least mine is. Tracks decent, especially for the age. Powerslot holds speed well, not sure on the 1:1. Easy to see out of and drive, but does not handle chop and other boat wakes well. Only thing to looks for is guages and trim. Very hard to find original, other than that, just mechanical. Very simple boats, if you like the looks of them, you'll love one!

Thanks for all the information. What is an 85 in good overall shape worth? 600-700 hours, Powerslot, 351 PCM, original MasterCraft trailer, and all original.

Check out onlyinboards.com and ski-it-again.com for an idea of what S & S boats are going for. So much depends on condition, options, color, etc.
