I has a similar quandary a few months back. My venerable Nissan Pathfinder was on life support. I drive 30 miles each way to work, and tow a X2 less than 4 times a year. I picked up a 2012 MDX and absolutely love it. Handling is much less truck like than the pathfinder / 4runner. really fun to drive, and plenty of comfort for long trips. More than enough power for towing.

IMO with a 197 you really don't need a 3/4 ton truck or anything else with 7000# towing.

I've had time behind the BMW 5 diesel. It's a great vehicle and would highly recommend it, but it's limited to 6000 towing capacity. It towed the X2 just fine...

Recently updated to the Range Rover Sport (diesel) and it's been amazing so far. It tows 7700 and I can't believe the fuel economy on this thing. Cost to purchase is another thing though...

Man I would love an SQ7 but even if we were to get them over here, that would be out of my budget.

For now my plan is to keep the Touareg unless the buyout offer puts me in a later model with nothing out of pocket. I don't know if a fix would cripple it but I'm going to wait it out and see a bit longer. I do love seeing what others are doing, that X5 looks awesome! I even like the look of the Range Rovers but I don't want to get that friendly with a mechanic.

How's the used market on X5s? I had an M5 and I wasn't very happy that parts were so expensive when I tried to fix things myself, so I sold it just before the bubble on them popped.

I am in the exact same boat as you. 2012 Touareg TDI. While I'm happy to take VW's money (which is significantly more than what I paid for the car 2 years ago) I will surely miss this car. My plan is to buy another 2013-2016 that have the modifications have been made but will have to wait and see when they become available. Only the 2009-2012 cars are eligible for buyback, 2013-2016 will get a 'fix'... I'm guessing once people start to collect there money on the 2013-2016s they will start to hit the market. Right now you can't find one anywhere.

There is also the Grand Cherokee Diesel. In my opinion it is too small for the $$ they think it is worth. For the same dollar get the DUB. I elected to go the Ram Crew Cab Ecodiesel route for our hauler. Big roomy cabin, like any F/S truck. More room than any of the SUV's. (except maybe the monster ford Excursion with a 7.3) Hard to beat what you get for your dollar when they discount them 25%. Be patient, the deals are out there.

Considering purchasing a hitch for my wife's 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. She doesn't have the diesel, just the V6. I think towing is close to 6k but not sure I want to drop $220 if it's going to tow like crap. I've got a single axle trailer under my X2 so I won't be close to that 6,000lb capacity.

I still haven't heard any info on my buyback, guess I'll just have to wait a bit longer. I'm totally leaning towards getting a newer one with the fix if I have to give it back. It's hard to find something that can tow and still be enjoyed on a daily commute.

I also have a bit of work to do if they want it back. I put a dpf delete and tune on it I'll have to revert back to stock before they get it, hopefully I can just apply that to a newer one.

True but it's kinda an offer I can't refuse. I'm hearing it should be 7k or more over what I paid for it 2 years ago.
