new to board 84 S&S

All,

I have been reading this forum for about a year and decided to join. I have been restoring an 84 stars n strips. Two years ago my son was working at an FFA camp. The motor was not properly winterized and had water in the oil. I bought it for $800.00. Unfortunately the head and block were cracked. Put a long block in it and really enjoyed it last summer. I grew up on inboards (Chris Craft). This winter I am working on the gelcoat. It was really abused at this camp. The boat is light gray and trimmed in red. Wet sanding (12000) and the 3mm rubbing, finish and hand glaze has restored the gray. However, the red is far too oxidized. You can see the original red color with the decals removed. I was able to match the gray through Master craft and Spectrumcolor, but neither can tell me the number for the red. Their records only go back to 1987. They do have a number for red in 1987. Can anyone tell me the Spectrumcolor number? I have also talked with Nini-Craft of Florida, another supplier of gel coats.

Thanks

Bob

Welcome. Glad to have you here. I for one would love to see some pictures if you have them. No idea on the Gel Coat question. Sorry.

To me, this forum is about love of inboard boats. It is about the sharing of information and, on a good day, some humor. It is not about post count, brand of boat, or any other superfluous labels that lend themselves to a false sense of superiority. Please, respect one another, try to pass on accurate information, and keep your eye on the ball.

Nothing for 84 red, but there is a listing for 87 dark red.
But you already know that....

I am going through the same process restoring an '89 190 and have been told that the Spectrum colors don't always match. You might be better off finding someone locally to color match some gelcoat for you.

Before you try re-gelcoating, you may want to give wet sanding another try. I think you meant you used 1200 grit. Gel coat is very hard and you will probably need a more aggressive grit to get through the oxidation. Starting with 600 is what I would try, then move to 400 if you need more cut. Use (400)-600-800-1000-1200-compound-polish.

Disclaimer: This info is what I have gathered reading this site and others on restoring color on fiberglass (MC and CC). I havent actually done this myself- though this is the approach I will take while restoring the color of my white deck this spring. Anyone with first hand experience is welcome to correct me!

Yes, I did mean 1200. Before I can paint the red it has to be sanded with 600. I will do a test area and see how well the color comes back. If not I will take a 1 inch circular sample form where a star was and get the color number. attached pics
