I don't know if SW flies to Maine (Portland?) but Maine in September is one of the most beautiful vacations I've ever taken. If you like lobster and spectacular fall colors you will be in heaven. Bar Harbor and Booth Bay are two places there that I would recommend.

Can you get to Sarasota / Bradenton Airport? You could drive to Ft. Myers (about an hour) then catch the ferry to Key West. Check out link below for schedule & rates.

not sure on Portland Maine but SW does fly into Manchester NH which isn't very far of a drive.

We did that last year in September, the week after Labor Day. Flew into Manchester on SW and drove as far north as Camden. We did it in 4 or 5 days, which included a ferry trip and overnight stay on Monhegan Island. Very nice trip and we ate a lot of lobster rolls.

if you do the NE, I will find the name of the little town & walk up window lobster bar that we went to that had 2 full steamed lobsters, fries, bread & drink for $10.99. it was a little local lobstering community that the individual fishermen would bring in the catch each morning and sell on the dock to the local cafes. Pretty much everywhere else was $21 for one lobster plus a side or two, drink was extra.

Depending on what speed you want to go. If your looking for a slow one by far the best relaxing weekend trip my wife and I ever took was to Savannah GA. Got a place in town and didn't get back in the car until we left- Food, booze, brownchicken browncow, etc... Dare I say on a forum with mostly men... Romantic...? I dare.

Savannah isn't listed as a destination for SW but Charleston is, which is another place we haven't been.
