By the way, make no mistake. We are watching the best QB ever in Peyton Manning. The guy is sick, averaging 263 yards passing per game over his career. That is just plain sick. Enjoy watching him while you can....if he comes back from his neck injury.

Peyton is a great QB no doubt about it, but my vote would go to Dan Marino as the best ever. You're probably too young to remember Marino with Mark Duper & Mark Clayton as receivers CP ---

They did not count shovel passing yards and touchdowns when Marino played.

Now to back up my statement that Aikman in Canton is a joke, here are his numbers vs. others that are not in Canton and their numbers, GP = games played

So, if Aikman played on one of the best rushing teams ever (Emmit Smith) and his numbers aren't that great, why is he in Canton? So he was on a great team, so what. If anything Dave Krieg should have been in there LONG before Aikman. So should have Esiason based on yards passing and TD's.

I found the comparison between Sims and Aikman to be interesting. Same type QB, in similar offenses, yet Aikman is in and Sims is not. They both won Superbowls, isn't that a prerequisite? That rule seems to apply to everyone except Marino and Fouts apparently. And I'm not saying Sims should be in either. He was a good QB on a very good team just like Aikman.

I have some the other way. Why are Joe Namath and Bob Geise in the HOF?

Based on that, Eli Manning should walk into the HOF after 5 years and one minute after retiring for beating the patriots in the SuperBowl a couple years ago.

Hate to say it... But I have to agree. The Colts performance this season without him has been an eye opener for a lot of people.

I am a little late on the thread.
Let me preface this by saying I am not much a a football guy(hockey is my thing). However being couped up after surgery since the season started rolling I have been following it a ton this year.

I have just one gripe..........I am tired of the chest pounding and td dances from guys who are losing by 20 points. I mean ***? Have some class and act like you made a play before........Guys from the other team should be laying them out.

The other thing that blows my mind is the sropoff in talent at QB when the #1 goes down. Holy crap......does the second string guy never throw a pass in practice or what? Its down right embarrassing. I understand all the timing issues between routes n what not but these guys can barely throw 5yd passes without getting picked off. Teams are crumbling when their #1 goes down it seems.

FWIW, I LOVE to debate who is the best ever at any position in football, especially QB's. It is like a drug.

Anyway, Tricky I do remember Marino, I'm not that young. So lets look at the numbers, because numbers don't lie.

Marino
GP 242, YDS 61361, TD 420, INT 252, RATING 86.4

Manning, Peyton that is...
GP 208, YDS 54828, TD 399, INT 198, RATING 94.9

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? 94.9 rating over 208 games? That is freaking rediculous.

This number is the number that I feel is most important;
Manning yards per game 263 vs. Marino's 253.

YPG is really the yard-stick in my eyes.

Manning TDs per game 1.92 vs. Marino's 1.74

Shall I go on?

Manning has had 10 years where he passed for over 4000 yards vs. 6 for Marino. In fact other than his rookie year, Manning has had 4000+ yards every season except 2005.

I know Marino playing in Florida holds a special place in your heart Tricky, but I will give Marino a solid #2 QB of all time with nobody else competing for #2.....that is unless Drew Brees keeps up his current pace for a few more years. He is averaging 263 YPG over his career and a stunning 298 YPG for his 6 years in New Orleans and passed for over 5K yards twice in 4 years. He is still 14K yards behind Manning at this point, but the guy is making a case for himself.

The rules also allow a receiver to run his routs a little easier as well.

Passer rating is the number that puts that into perspective because a QB can have a great QB rating at half-time of a game.
