I can see you're on the west coast. If you're in SoCal, these guys are in Redondo Beach.

Post #2 in this thread worked for my 2000:
http://www.mastercraft.com/teamtalk/...ad.php?t=44154

Not sure if that's only for whichever MEFI generation I have or if it works for more recent ones.

Do not Paperclip a MEFI 5 - MCX engine or something similar to that vintage .... you will blow relays.

The "older" ECU's would be ok with that method, but I would not feel confident enough in my re-collection to put it in writing.

From EngineNut, who works for Indmar, "That abiity went away with the advent of CAN communication which started in 2005 model year.".

I don't think it is a specific year, but Jim and EngineNut know what they are talking about.

My 06 has a MEFI 4 and you can use the paper clip or Rinda Codemate to check codes.

Where I believe the change comes is boats with MEFI 5 ECUs. These boats have the CAN and you cannot use the paper clip trick and the Rinda Codemate will not connect to it. I believe the change to MEFI 5s was in 07 when the new exhaust was also added.

I just posted the reply from EngineNut, after my specific question to him about this. If it has CAN, the paper clip method SHOULD NOT be used.

I have an 06 5.7 MCX, and wanted to find out if could use the code mate. I sent pictures over to tech at Michigan motorz and he told me I have MIFE 5 or 6 with CAN.

Re-read my post from earlier- "If it has CAN, you CAN'T use the paperclip", which also means you can't use a regular code scanner.

What info are you hoping to get and, more importantly, what do you propose to do with that info? Do you know how to troubleshoot the problems that may occur?

I was mearly pointing out that my 06 is a MIFE 5 I thought I had ready someone thought that the change was made in 07, so Jason would know not to use the paper clip since he also has 06

CAN is the determining factor, AFAIK. If it has it, the engine would have a harness for this.
