Are you over the WOT RPMs??

I ordered a new prop with less pitch and more diameter to clean up the surf wave and add power under load. The prop really improved the wave, but my WOT RPMs on an Ilmor 5.7 went from 5000 to 5380, and the documented WOT is supposed to be 5200 RPMS. Now, I know that someone is gonna say, "RTFM - the manufacturer knows best", but I am curious to learn how many of you are into your rev limiter if you run wide open.

This seems like a concern to me, but the manufacturer of the prop says that they see far more aggressive props used than what I am doing in order to get a cleaner wave under more load. Granted, I never run at WOT or I would have purchased a bass boat and a fishing permit, but this does seem like an area where some additional feedback is warranted.

I wouldn't spin it over the manufacturer's recommendation for any prolonged period. As you noted, the top end on these boats is nothing exciting and not what they're about.

My boat is prop'd down enough to over rev also--I utilize my built in, organic limiter to avoid that situation!

My limiter is my wallet. Who can afford to run these boats at WOT?

What rpm is the electronic limiter set at on the ilmor? Unless you're constantly banging off it I wouldn't be too worried. It's a small block motor so it doesn't mind to rev.

I'd say the last 1/4 of my throw in the throttle arm doesn't affect top speed, just RPM's. I run an Acme 1285 on my "99 Star to chug at heavy ballast, but I also slalom. Every time I crank across the lake wide open to my course, I always find myself backing off because of how high it revs. I might try the Acme 537 because it's supposed to help bring the RPM's down +-500 across the range.

Thanks for the feedback. I have two more props coming next week to try. They have been great to work with and help me dial in the wake for multiple watersports. I think we undershot the pitch initially which allowed for a 400 RPM gain, and this ultimately made the slalom bump a little more intense too. I was just concerned about the limiter to begin with, but now I've decided to swap the prop an keep tweaking. Thanks for the info!
