tech help please?

i just put my boat in the water for the first time today. its a 97 PS 205 LT1 slot. i had 2 problems today and am looking for some input.
first off it doesnt like to start. cranks over fine but just wont fire, then out of nowhere it fires right up and idles beautifully. ECM or fuel pump relay or something like that?

second, which may or may not be related. i started out with all the power in the world, it was actually over revving around 5300 RPM. then after cruising around for awhile the next WOT run only pulled around 4200 RPM and it felt like it was low on power. if i backed the throttle off to around 3/4 to 7/8 it picked up a few hundred RPM and a few mile and hour. TP sensor possibly?
the previous owner said it always pulled at 4900 RPM.

i'm a Ford master tech and have no problems getting into the electronics end but i was looking for some input first.
thanks
tom

MAP sensor

Disconnect the MAP sensor. Facing the stern of the boat. Sitting in the passenger seat. It is on top of the plentnum left side just behind the intake. See if that helps. If it does that sensor is bad.

thank you jim, will do tomorrow.
one other question for you. does my boat have a standard OBDII connector and if so where is it located? my ford scanner has a generic OBDII mode and i'd like to check for codes.

Codes on LT-1

The LT-1 has a OBD1 (Tech 1) port.

You cannot check for codes in that motor with a OBD2. Marine adaptors are differnet ( The OLD GM Type)

Get a fuel pressure gauge on that bad boy Tom. Sounds like a pump/pressure issue. I tried to get some exact pressures from our service link but the site is down. I know the port fuel or non TBI engines will not start with less than 55/60lbs of fuel pressure. The TBI's run on lower numbers but I'm not sure off the top of my head. Restricted fuel filters will also make them act like your describing but should not keep it from starting

i will try to get out this week and monitor fuel pressure for the loss of power concern. will also check power to the pump and spark during the no start if disconnecting the MAP doesnt take care of it.

The fuel pressure for the '97 LT-1 should be about 40 pounds. You might also look at the fuel pressure regulator and the vacuum line going to it. You probably know how to test the regulator with a vacuum pump. If you want to check for codes, connect the A and B terminals on the diagnostic port and watch the check engine light(MIL). A bad MAP sensor will be 33 or 34, a bad TPS will be 21 or 22.

I would start by checking the fuel pressure, though. If your shop has a TECH 1, see if there's a GM Marine card with it. The GM cartruck card won't work.

It's the harness with the plug that would normally be mounted under the dash, located at the rear of the motor. It has a black rubber or plastic cap over it.
