351 rebuild or purchase long block

I have recently aquired 1989 Prostar 190 with a 351 that has been sitting uncoverd for the past 4-5 years and is in need of a lot of restoration. I pulled the heads and the gasket is blown in two locations and the cylinders are pitted and rusty in some cases. I'm unsure if I should rebuild or purchase a long block. Does anyone have any recommendation? I have been looking online and found a company called First Mate Marine Engines, has anyone ever heard of this company? In some discussions with local engine builders is sounds like I am lookin at about $3,000 to have the existing enginer rebuilt, does that sound accurate?

First off welcome to team talk! Sounds like your '89 will make a nice project boat, and oh we must see pics of the progress.

You'll get a lot of opinions on here from much smarter guys than myself so I'll let the others chime in. Personally if the boat is in good condition and you plan on keeping her for some time go with a reman engine from a company with a good reputation. Jasper comes to mind.

If that boat sat outside for many years, good chance your block could be cracked. The only way to know for sure is to tear it down and have it magna-fluxed. Not worth it for a base 351 if you ask me. Get something ready to drop in, perhaps with a bit more HP. And a warranty.

Is it a powerslot trans?

Is that $3000 just for the long block itself or does that include labor? Summitracing sells first mate engines also so it "should" be a good quality reman.

Purchased a 351 LB from Rapido Marine (out of Florida) last year for $1,500. Order and shipping went well, engine was put together nice according to buddy that helped me. Used all summer lonf with no problems at all.

Jerseydave, how can I tell if it is a powerslot transmission. This is my first mastercraft and I'm quickly learning, however need a little guidance as to what makes this important. Thanks

j.mccreight, I saw that link as well on summitracing and was thinking the same way as you with the backing of the summit.

eriksen4, just checked out rapido marine, looks promising. thanks

There will be a plate on the transmission that gives the ratio, 1.52:1 is a Power Slot, 1:1 is the standard transmission.

What prop do you have? 13 X 13 or close would be a 1:1 trans, 14 X 18 would be powerslot.
Also the powerslot propshaft is 1 1/8" instead of 1" for a 1:1 trans.

Look for the ID plate on the trans first like thatsmrmastercraft said.

I found a tag on transmission that states 1:1, so it looks like I have the standard transmission.

Is it common for the transmission to be in bad shape if the motor is in the condition that I am looking at (terrible)?

If the transmission was under water due to being left outside and flooded it likely needs to be rebuilt also.
