Every carbureted Ford I own runs a 143 degree thermostat. All run at 160 +/- on the temp gauge.

PCM EFI Fords specify the 160 stat, and the engines run closer to 180 on the gauge.

I dont know if Indmar is different, but I suspect not.

When I called skidim, they specifically told me that the 351W can take either T-stat, but the 160 was the recommended choice because it's helps in the atomizing of the fuel, resulting in more efficient furl burn and more consistent performance. I went with the 160, and my temp gauge never gets over 150 and the engine runs great. I went with the opinion of the people in the know....

Not to discredit anyone from DIM, because I buy from them and have spoken with their staff and was impressed for the most part. But, I'm not sure I buy the "better performance from better fuel burn" bit. Only reason modern engines in cars run at 220 is for emissions. Nothing about performance. Also, if your temp is actually around 150, the T-Stat is more then likely not even open. The much lower T-Stat in boats are because the motors are at a constant high RPM with HUGE amounts of load compared to a automobile.
When my boat is up to temp it's either right at 143 or so (T-Stat open) or right at 150 in the hottest water.

My '87 ps190 has the indmar 351 and it runs 120+/- while cruising and 160-180 idling..... sounds like I'm stuck open or non-existant....

I do think you will be fine either way. The most important part is just being on the water enjoying your boat!

what is your water temp? How is the raw water impeller? My factory buzzer comes on around 190. (Now light, after I wired in a light to my buzzer cause I can't hear the darned thing while running)

New impeller was the same as old one, it has been that way since i have owned it. 2 years now. I did replace the impeller middle of last summer, but it is still the same.

After pulling my kids for an hour or so and I stop and idle it will creep up in that range for a few minutes then ease back down.....on the fake lake it won't get over 110 on the guage.....

If it's open or not there, you will not likely get to 160 idling unless there are pieces of impeller clogging up water flow. I forgot to put my impeller in last spring and it ran pretty cold all the time..........then I figured it out.
