Lentiman- The technique is the same for combo skis. The part on the back of the boat is different, if the skis are too long for the swim platform, just have them place their feet against the platform, practice, then put skis on.
Having your elbows on your knees keeps you in that crouched position and keeps your skis from spreading apart.
Falling forward usually means standing up too soon aka: elbows have come off of the knees.

Very nice...I will start people out on the boom so they get the sensation of riding, and then do this before trying their first long line start.

I've used that technique with great success for several years. Depending on how light the kid is, I'll even have them pivot the board right on the platform so they end up with one binding planted on the platform and one binding hovering over the water. This way they simulate the entire process of getting up and turning hips into riding position.
