Got a ticket - road closed to thru trafffic

Got a ticket yesterday as I went through a sign that said "road closed to thru traffic" with a cop sitting right there. I rolled past it going 20mph and was debating asking the cop for new directions or pulling over and looking at the smartphone. Detour was marked and did not take it since I was not familiar with that route.

I decided to pull over and look at google maps. I was already pulling over on the shoulder and then he came after me.

I did not explain my situation well and he issued me a citation. I should have explained I pulled over and am trying to figure out if I am "local" or "thru" traffic as I bring up the map.

I guess I'll have to be clear in court and dispute that I went past the sign thinking I was local traffic.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't think that you violated anything if you didn't actually go through before he ticketed you. What a jerK! You would think he would explain the situation, tell why you shouldn't go through, and let you go.

I'm from IL and was going to WI to do some evening wakeboarding (which was awesome BTW).

I got cited for disobeying traffic sign in Racine county. Statue 346.04 (2).

The signs means no thru traffic, only local traffic if there is no other route to final destination. I knew where I was going however pulled over to think about my options since I knew I made the wrong call.

I hope that when I show up to court and explain that I was not sure whether I was local traffic or not, and decided to pull over and figure things out on the map, maybe they will let me off. Afterall, I went 100' or whatever past the sign and pulled over.

you should have run for it.. JK!!!

I am sure the judge will let you off, but what is the cost of the ticket? <$100 probably not worth the effort ... I consider those the cost of driving... my fee for that road... look I paid for that stripe and that section of tar... they do it here too.. usually right after the sign goes up... so they can catch a bunch of people who don't know their way around...

GLWT.. good luck with ticket...

ahh the being from Illinois ticket - I would fight it - that's a moving violation, I wouldn't want it on my record... IL/WI reciprocate - take swatguy with you.. - not an attorney but a Lake Forest PD officer...

could be a fun day..

There is no such thing as a cheap ticket for IL guys in WI. This one is $175.
