Contacted Fantasic Finishes and they qouted me about $800 to tear it down, rebuild, and identify any other mechanical problems. Broken parts would be extra, but that's expected and perfectly acceptable. They responded very quickly and seemed like a great outfit on first impressions only.

Also contacted Michigan Motorz. The rebuilt unit they have in stock is around $1299, but he expressed interest in also buying mine off me in a swap. I haven't gotten back to him to determine what it'd be worth, but it's certainly an option if the price is right... especially since I can save significantly on shipping versus the other joint in Ohio.

.....and it's out.



Straight forward process once you get at it. Took longer to warm up the garage, remove the engine cover, and rear floor panel (set back in place in picture), than it did the transmission.

Now just to clean the bildge and ship this baby off.

Nice job 86Skier! If I'm going through the same process in the spring I may have some questions for you. Especially about alignment during the reinstallation. Here is a thought for now...many of us wouldn't think twice about adding a few extra horsepower if we had to pull the engine for a significant repair (heads, intake, compression, cam, etc.). Have you considered replacing the trans with a PowerSlot now that it is out? What else would you need? (drive shaft, prop, cutlass bearings...?) Not sure if the performance gain would be worth it$$$. Could be interesting though...

Good job bud. as i said in an early post about the installation studs, grind a 30 degree taper on the end you cut the head off for a nice alignment.

I had some down time this morning, so I figured I'd share a few pictures of the boat. I obtained it a few seasons back in a swap with another fellow boater.... I needed something more family friendly, and he wanted a go-fast boat that could kill you..... My wife was never more proud of me than when I came home without my old boat.

The previous owner had the engine fully gone through (now only about 150 hours on it), cleaned the rest of it up, replaced a portion of the upholstry where needed, etc. Runs great, looks great, no obvious problems... except the paint scheme. It's shame he took the easy way out and went with a half-@ss stars and stripes pattern vs the original '86 rainbow. Still trying to decide if I go back to the original, or try something new...

Pre-transmission overhaul, the only improvements I've made to date were the fabrication of a new backseat, installation of a bimini so the kiddo has a place to hide from the sun, and I had the prop turned. Otherwise, what you see is what I got.
