x2 on more info! Although unless it is leaking like a running faucet, I hardly think that is the only reason you got such high temps.
Replacing the pump is a real easy fix and it sounds like you need to do that regardless if that's your only problem. Take the plate off and look at the impeller. Are the rubber paddles all gone or partially there? when you ask "What am I looking for inside?" just do a search here or skidim.com for a picture of an impeller.

I know you said you have a leak from the water pump, but you might check the oil cooler back by the transmission, see if it's plugged. I had a leak at the shaft on the water pump, and even though it was a reasonable amount of water coming out, it never caused overheating issues.

If it looks anything like that, it needs to be replaced.
