Underwater Lights - On when running?

I just bought 09 xstar this summer. The PO told me not to turn on the underwater lights with the boat moving. He said that without the water to cool them they will burn out. Is this true?

I don't think that the lights are out of the water long enough to worry about it. It doesn't actually dry it under the transom when under way.

mine are connected to the nav lights, so i really dont have an option for turning them off while running at night. ive actually felt them when on and they dont get that hot. i wouldnt worry about it

I've seen plenty of pictures with people running the lights while moving. I'd think it would be close enough to the water that they would stay cool.

If they are LED lights, they will not get hot!

Also, how does a normal globe cool off out the water...

Doubt this has any substance....

I would look up the mfg and see if there are any unique instructions.
From a light damage perspective, I don't know of any that will be damaged by running without submersion.

Just to throw in the LEGAL aspect......it is illegal and could be confusing to other boats to run with lights other than specified navigation. Not really an issue on a local puddle with no traffic but on a big lake or river with boat traffic or ambient shore clutter, there can be problems.
