Original trailer jack just broke.

Hi,

my original MC trailer (made in UK) year model 1995 jack just broke, the lever handle rotates, but does not lift up or lower the trailer.
I opened the metal cover and see the gears not rotating and one small loose pin.
This pin needs to be welded back, where to open the jack more or I just need Fulton F2 or some other new jack?

Thanks for any advice!

BR,

Pasi

20 plus years is a good run on any hardware. If money is not an issue I'd just replace it. I'd offer to send you the old one I have but shipping would be more than the jack.

that's a press pin, you should be able to replace it for about 25 cents and 30 minutes worth of greasy work

Greasy work indeed. The press pin in its place makes the gears rotate?

I recently replaced both my gears and pins when the gears wore too much to properly mesh. Took about 15 minutes after I ordered the parts online (I think from Amazon) for about $20. Repair is your best option as finding an exact match for the jack mount on a trailer of this vintage is very difficult as the original jack manufacturer no longer makes jacks with that type of mount. Converting to a newer jack requires a conversion kit which will set you back $60 or more, not counting the price of the new jack ($125-$200 depending upon the model). Just make sure you pay attention to where the metal washers are located before you remove the gears so that you can assemble it back in the correct order.

What he said. Your jack is broken, no good as is. Gently disassemble it, noting where all the parts go. When mine broke as yours did I first used a 1/8" machine screw to replace the broken pin; it didn't work. I was forced to go to Ace Hardware and spend $0.25 (plus tax!) to get the right size replacement pin. It still works.

Heh! It was just the pin indeed! Just an old ?5" nail cut shorter, which was broken in three pieces. The gears are ok, so just new shortened nail in, covered all with proper grease, and it works like as ever!
Thanks for all the advice!

To quote Hannibal from "The A Team": I love it when a plan comes together!
