The 30 is a pretty versatile boat. Good surf and wakeboard wake. What motor does it have?

For that year, I would look for the MCX or LQ9 or L-18 (if you're lucky enough to find one).

I would stay away from a X-30 with the RTP engine.

My '02 X-30 has the L-18 and I think it's just enough motor for the boat.

I had an 03 with the MCX engine, it was a very good all around boat. good surf wake and wakeboard wake. The only issues I had was the 03 interior wore out and I replaced it with new interior, it ran me about 3500 dollars. other than that I had no problems and it was a great boat.

I had an '03 Maristar 230 with a tower. With ballast it makes a nice wakeboard wake. I never surfed it but I would imagine it's good for that too. MCX engine is fine with the correct prop. Mine came factory with a 14 X 20 and holeshot was poor. 13.7 X 17 made it much better.

'03 needed a rudder upgrade (larger rudder) and I didn't like the wakeboard racks either. Also some '03 models had vinyl issues.

If you can swing a bit more $$, look into an '06-newer. Bigger interior, better stereo speakers, better vinyl, probably better surf wake, drive-by-wire throttle, etc.

I have a 2004 230VRS with MCX. It's been an OK boat. Engine and performance have been solid. I agree about it needing re-propping and the larger rudder. The hull design is good. The ski wake isn't at all bad for free-skiing, and even my boat without tower or ballast has a pretty decent wake for wakeboarding. The hull does ride rough water very well. The interior is extremely roomy and comfortable. Plenty of room, plenty of storage. I do agree that 2006 was the break-point. I think MasterCraft upped their game in that year.

Those years had bad vinyl...mine is cracking on wear areas. Carpeting is OK. Dash mounting is bad...tends to be very squeaky. The side panel where the throttle is located is prone to breakage. Of course, there is also the very famous problems with the fuel pump. If you buy that boat, make sure you read the Fuel Pump threads here. They offer cost-effective solutions to a pretty common MasterCraft problem.

If I had known then what I know now. I would have traded my '04 in 2006 for an '06.
