Trying to remove cuppling from shaft

Hello,

I have a Ford 351 engine. I have a bend in the shaft so it needs to come off for repairs.

The cuppling will not come off. Tried adding some soap and letting it sit overnight. Someone has suggested heating it up to get the pin out.

Any other suggestions? Do I need a puller of some kind like for the prop?

Heat the coupler up could help and yes you will need a puller of some kind.



This is very cheap and easy to use model that most all auto parts stores would carry.

Thanks! I got the puller and it doesn't seem to be budging. Here is a photo of the end. Do I need a socket wrench to get that gold nut to budge? I have a 1 inch shaft - what size wrench do I need?

Is it just me or is the nut still on it? It looks like the nut is still on the shaft inside the coupler.

That nut has to come off before it will come out.



You may want to check out this page as well. It has some ideas oh how to get the shaft out once you get the nut off.

Thanks Tim and Jim, trying to get the nut off today. There was some additional advice about a part that should also be replaced at the same time but it seems to have disappeared (or I am overlooking it).

MCBoatGirl, the additional part was probably the cutlass bearing. It is basically a sleeve inside the strut. The shaft has to be removed to replace it, so go ahead and replace it while you have the shaft out.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you have a bent propshaft, you undoubtedly have a bent strut also. Is the Prop OK?

What makes you think the propshaft is bent? Post pictures.

I'd recommend searching here for "bent strut", and read a few threads to get a sense of how to determine what's bent, what needs replacement, and how to do it. Feel free to ask questions - there's a lot of knowledgeable people here.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for the input. We have been working out way back from the prop. We hit something with the prop and replaced it. Still a vibration so looked at the strut and realized that needed straightening. Sent it off for straightening and put it back on. There was still a vibration when we put in the water so we ran the engine with water running through it and looked at the end of the shaft. We could see a visible "wobble" in the shaft. So now we are working to fix that.

I have someone mechanically inclined and good with engines helping me, but working on boat maintenance is new to both of us. Any and all advice is helpful.
