Pre purchase inspection checklist

about to go check out a 2001 X-Star thats in my local area, lets try and get together a checklist that can be sticky for anyone else to use upon purchase of a used boat.

first few things that come to mind are

[ ] obvious nicks or scratches in the gel coat, or spider cracks around tower bases
[ ] rub rail intact, no screws missing or gaps in rubber.
[ ] graphics or logos intact with no dock rash
[ ] look at transom where swim platform meets fiberglass, obvious cracks in mounts or gelcoat
[ ] look at exhaust through hulls (flaps in tact etc)
[ ]check prop shaft alignment,
[ ] check for bends around prop strut, check for spider cracks where strut meets gel.
[ ] check rotation of prop shaft, look for bends.
[ ] check prop for bends or cuts
[ ] check tracking fins for bends, spider cracks around gel of fins
[ ] look for scrapes on bottom of hull from beaching or improperly loading on trailer
[ ] look at top of transom for scratches or nicks from boards
[ ] check back sun pad for rips tears and wore down stitching
[ ] open up motor hatch, check for mildew from being put up wet
[ ] check exhaust manifolds for rust or leaks
[ ] look for fluids in bilge
[ ] compression test if possible
(not really to engine savvy so feel free to add in)
[ ] check ballast pumps and impellers for proper function
[ ] check all hoses for kinks or holes
[ ] check ballast tanks for leaks
[ ] check all seats for stitching coming apart or abnormal wear
[ ] check battery terminals for corrosion
[ ] check amplifiers for function and mounting (if applicable)
[ ] check gauges for proper function, and if perfect pass holds speed
[ ] lake test, listen for abnormal sounds from tranny, or exhaust leaks or abnormal noises.

im drawing up blanks, im sure this will not only help me, but also other perspective buyers.
feel free to add!

I would break the list down into sections to be more complete and easy to follow.

1. Hull
2. Interior
3. Engine
4. Trailer

Check that the trailer brakes are working! I recently purchased an 02 xstar from Australia and asked the guy inspecting to check the brakes which he said was all good. When it arrived it had the Reliable coupling and calipers on it with the coupling filler cap rusted on and now useless and the brake calipers stuck open. It's now just an extra expense that I wasn't counting on.

The ballast pumps are going to be the aerator/cartridge type unless the owner swapped them out. So the impellar check won't be necessary per say. You can pop the cartridge out and make sure the they are not missing a fin, but the cartridge pumps are bomb proof.

The rest are more of a model specific checklist.

Vinyl is really the downfall on this boat so check all the seams well. I can almost guarantee spider cracks around the front tower feet on this boat. They didn't really beef the backing plates up til later. If therr are none that's a huge bonus. If the side XStar decals are messed up you can't get those and you can't remove them without having a huge oval of what every gelcoat color the boat has there so you will need to have a custom shop reproduce something. You can still get you hands on the transom decals and side MC name decals.

Other than that the gauge clusters in these older boats with the MDC will have the gauges bouncing a bit. It's usually the oil pressure so if it does its normal.

The other main standout that really throws a lot of people is that the Hurth Tranny is really loud. When you put it into gear and out it clunks. It's very normal. It may also have a small rattle if you are feathering the throttle between neutral and drive without going fully into either. Again normal. There has been many of threads regarding it and MC issued a service bulletin recommending a swap to 15-40 oil instead of ATF.

Good luck. As you are well aware AWESOME BOAT.
