Northstar LTR 330 HP Engine in 2003 ProStar 190

I'm looking at purchasing a 2003 ProStar 190 which has Northstar LTR 330 HP engine in it. Engine and boat only have 53 hours. I'm familiar with the ProStar line, but not with this specific engine. Can anyone tell me pro's or con's about this engine? Is it reliable? Is it a disaster waiting to happen? I'm just trying to gather as much info as I can.

Thanks,
Jeff

I believe Northstar Engine is LQ9 6.0 L 385 HP

Here's the website for the 2003 manual. You can read more about the Engine specifications;
(I tried to cut and copy, but it didn't work, sorry)
http://www.mastercraft.com/assets/manual/20.pdf

We have an 03 with LQ9, 490 ish hours. We're the 2nd owners, we've put 200 hours on it, I had to replace the Engine's computer right after I got it, but no other problems since. I'd say it was an isolated incident.

Are you getting an 03 Anniversary, Stars and Stripes 190 ?

Good luck,

I have an 330 ltr in my xstar. It has been a great engine. I wouldn't be afraid of it.

Georgea0731 - The boat I'm looking at isn't the Anniversary Edition... I do like the Star and Stripes look. Thanks for the link!

BG1772 - How many hours do you have on your 330LTR? While you have had a good experience, have you heard anything else from other owners with this motor? Sorry, I'm just trying to do as much research as I can before making the purchase...

My last boat was a 2003 Malibu Response with the Monsoon 330. My sole experience with that engine was amazing because I racked up 1200 hours with no major issues. Unfortunately, I sold the boat to my brother and still regret the decision. I'm looking at the ProStar 190 to replace it.

I have just under 700 hours. My good friend had 1200 hours when he sold his 99 xstar. Another friend also has a 2001 xstar with about 1000 hours. In my opinion, it is a solid and reliable engine.

It is an easy motor to work on. I've found that most parts cross over to a 98 gmc Yukon.

I have a PS209 with the LTR330 in it and it is fine but has developed a stumble at holeshot. The engine has 540 hours or so on it. I think it's just a GM350 with Cadillac designed ignition system. Other posters have had good luck with this but its just a matter of finding the correct sensor or component to replace. They are not too terrible to diagnose, just too many electronic nannies anymore. There is a lot of support here, and with enough digging you can get stuff from NAPA.

I've had issues with both the tps and iac, but they are easy to replace. Tps caused a strange idle. Iac caused hard starts. Both issues were easily remedied with a trip to Napa and using a 99 Yukon as the automotive equivalent.

My worst problem wasn't even engine related. It was caused by the exhaust silencer choking the engine st about 3200rpm.

01 X9 here with 850 hrs on LTR 330.
Nothing but normal maintenance here! Seems to be a pretty good engine to me. Gets the X9 to footing speed with up to 5 people in it so I'm happy.

Nothing wrong with this engine, in any way. It's the same block, heads and accessories as most of the other engines but the intake plenum is much larger. 330 HP, BTW.

53 hours on the dash gauge? On a 10 year old boat, I would seriously doubt that- if you have a MC dealer near you, have them run the boat on the water and do some data acquisition. The full data set will include the engine hours, which is actual running hours, not how long the key has been turned ON. If the gauge was replaced, you'll know immediately.
