Traded the single axle for double axle - Restore!

Well, finally bit the bullet a few weeks ago and was able to swap these guys my perfectly good single axle for their double axle. Mine was a 1994, theirs a 1993. Perfect.

Here is what it looked like the day I bought it.....

First thing I needed to do is freshen up just the underside. Armed with a $5 can of spray paint, I hit a few spots underneath to tidy it up just a bit. Not too bad really!









And into our VERY tight storage......don't think using the suburban was going to work!!

Next.....the fun part! My wife and I talked before the trade and I said if we made the swap, I would need to put some money into it. With that, I called up California trailer works and ordered up some new gear!

New tongue actuator for 4 disc brakes
New swing tongue (cut to my specific length of 20")
4 new rotors
4 new calipers
4 sets of new wheel bearings

I called a local trailer shop and asked if they could install new skid wheel mounts as well as the folding tongue. No problem. I also found a few cracks and they said they could fix them up. So off to the shop it goes......









And drew the cut line for the Folding tongue.....

Just before taking off for Thanksgiving, I dropped the trailer off and had them do the work.

For the most part, everything looked good. However, the tongue was not done correctly and was not parallel with the rest of the boat frame....

After thinking about all through Thanksgiving, I finally brought it in and told them the problem. They looked at it briefly and agreed 100%....whew!

So they re-did the trailer tongue again for me. MUCH better!









Final weld.....Much better!

And in between the freezing evenings, I hit it with a little spray paint and looks sharp!

I have the same trailer but single axle. I restored it this summer. It started out better than yours (98). I needle gunned the frame to bare metal pretty much and POR-15'd and then enameled it. Tires, brakes, etc etc,,,, as well.

But, rust is inside the channels. At the rear there are probably drain holes. Hopefully your fingers won't find, like my littles ones did--cancer rust and bad....When I told the Admiral, that was the humbling part.

I'm hoping to get a dry storage spot at the nearby base marina, then there is not so much risk of the trailer frame disintigrating while most probably on the highway....

Until then I'm taking chances. Heck, even launching poses a durn risk.

I HATE #$*#@* RUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone got Santa's real address? I think I'll write and ask him to get some elves going to have me a new one made by Christmas. BUT, I doubt that will happen....

Crap now you got me thinking about the swing away tongue now. My trailer on my 1995 was pretty darn close to rusty like yours... cool how a little elbow grease and a can of paint can make it look.

Your brake rebuild looks awesome.
