Transmission went today!! Help! 1988 prostar

1988 prostar with velvet drive. Trans started getting hard to put in drive today and then very quickly the trans would not work. If you really rev it up it will go after a minute or so. Any suggestions? Fluid and cable are fine.

How many hours on it? When you say hard to put in gear.... hard to move controller? or no reaction when controller moved?

How does the trans fluid look and smell? Where is the level at? How long since the trans fluid has been changed?

the fluid was up and did not seem to smell. I am not sure on how many hours. No immediate action when the controller was moved. But if you wait a minute it would eventually move. I have been told the pump and I have been told the selector piston should be cleaned.

the engine is new. Not sure on the hrs on the trans. trans in gear and you have to rev the engine for a minute or so and it will start to move.

Yup revs increase pressure... prolly time for a rebuild... sound like slippy or engaging well after a few moments.
