1989 Tristar 190

I am new to the forum. I just bought my first mastercraft boat. I am upgrading from my 1983 ski nautique. My wife really wanted an open bow boat. I found a deal on a 1989 Tristar 190 with 620 hours on it.

It needs some buffing, cleaning, trailer painted, and I am considering replacing the carpet.
There is one soft spot in the walkway between the cockpit and bow.

The motor purrs. It has a new battery, carb rebuild, and impeller.

My question: Is there anything special I need to know about this boat? Is there anything special I need to do?

How would I go about repairing the soft spot in the floor. Any recommendations for carpet?
Recommendations for gel coat cleaning and polishing would be helpful.

Also trailer painting recommendations.

Thanks so much. I am proud to be an owner of a Mastercraft boat!

Congrats on buying a great boat and welcome to the family. We all love pictures here so don't hesitate to post up some shots of the new boat.

Thank you. The trailer is fairly rusty. It has been on the coast for the past 6 years.

With an open channel trailer, you may well be able to clean it up and paint it. Start with a ball peen hammer and search for soft spots. Should you need tires and/or wheels, I would be happy to get you a quote.

I am no expert but I redid my carpet this winter and removed the floor section you are talking about. Use jacks and raise slowly.. There are some pics in here about raising and removing the sections.
Hope this helps a little bit.

Welcome to the TT group. You'll enjoy your TriStar -- it was my first MC. I redid the carpet on mine. As has been mentioned, there are some threads here on that . . . and yes, you do need to carefully jack up the port and starboard consoles just a bit to get the walkthrough section out. I reinforced mine with some added glass cloth and resin. The sections have a plywood centre that's set in a fibreglass shell. The plywood can rot after a while.

What did you like about the tristar so much?
And does it have a good wake for surfing and wakeboarding if I add enough people or ballast?

Four things:
- under $10k
- open bow
- great ski wake (almost as good as the PS190)
- OK boarding wake (I had a FlyHigh pylon extension)
