1999 X Star, ATF leak

Hey guys, I am mechanically inclined, but new to mastercraft & vdrive. I have put about 10 hours on my used boat (260 hours total), and the transmission seems to be leaking - possibly leaking to empty at this point since the dipstick seems dry, and there's at least a couple quarts of what looks like ATF in the bilge.

Can anyone walk me through finding the trouble area and repair/replacing the seals/damage?

I am willing to bring it to a marina, but feel I am capable of this repair, and trust myself more than others to work on it.

I winterized the boat this winter by removing the raw water intake hose from the water pump and connecting a hose from it to a bucket of RV anti-freeze. Did I miss a step and ruin the transmission cooler? I would like to target the issue first, then possible perform the maintenance myself.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Kitt

Usually V drives don't use ATF and they use more of a motor oil .... I am sure someone will chime in but as a DD guy I believe that is correct .... Maybe ATF is thin enough to be escaping your seals and vents? Check for a manual and make sure you have the correct stuff in your tranny. Good luck keep us posted.

The transmission on that XStar can use either ATF or 15w-40 motor oil. My transmission had ATF in it when I bought it, and I swapped it for the heavier oil to help the low rpm rattle.

If it looks like ATF, I'd say it is. As far as leaking, I can't help ya there. I'd start by cleaning the bilge and trying to source the leak and move from there

Clean the bilge and use paper towels or diapers , diapers with their sticky tape are easy to attach around the tranny in key spots and capture the leak in progress while underway.

Be careful and don't touch a diaper to something too hot but I bet you find the leak check the level as well since an over filled tranny will blow out ATF since it expands when hot.

Check around the output shaft seals and the housing which attaches to the engine

oil cooler/lines looks good...

looks like a ton of ATF, but it's just a thin layer floating on the water... it is now drained.

as albertasurfer said they originally were tranny fluid but switched to 15w40 for the tranny's. might see where the leak is coming from and switch over.
