Twin Cities Public Access to Lakes

After escaping the brutality of Minnesota's winter several years ago for Charlotte, NC it now looks as though work will be taking us back there. We did not own our boat up there so aren't familiar with the local scene from a boaters perspective. Probably will not be springing the dough for lakefront living so want to get a handle on public access ramps. We have a 197TT and are recreational skiers, wakeboarders and beach/cove swimmers. Will be living on the west side--Maple Grove to Edina corridor. Want to be able to store boat at home and trailer in. Thanks for any advice and wisdom. . .other than to tell me to stay in Charlotte, which is sadly not an option!

We live in Maple Grove...we lease a slip on Lake Minnetonka each year...biggest lake in the West Metro with lots of big boats, little boats, and good all-around fun. Some of the more popular lakes that come to my mind are Fish Lake in Maple Grove, Lake Independence out in Loretto, & Medicine Lake in Plymouth. No shortage of public launches on Tonka...stay further on the West side of the lake, it's much calmer for smaller boats/skiing/boarding/etc.

Winter sucks up here, but summers are fantastic. Let me know if you have any questions, happy to help.

Lake Independence is really nice. Beautiful boat launch at a park. Nice clean water.

I used to live in Minnetonka and work in downtown Minneapolis, and I had a slip on Minnetonka. That is still one of the coolest lakes I've ever been on and I miss it. Check Craigslist for ads for a slip on the lake. There is so much to do there and you usually can find a nice place to ski or board.

Every once in a while I'd bring the boat to Lake Virginia which is a tiny lake right next to Minnetonka. It was free 10 years ago and was big enough to ride if nobody else was around.

Thanks for the input so far. From the responses, I have a few more questions. Are there fees for using the public launches? Anyone out there that ballpark what a slip rental should run if we were to go that route? Thanks again!

The only public launches that have fees are in State or Regional Parks. They typically have a $5 individual launch and a $25 season pass that allows you access to a number of different locations. All other public launches are free.

The MN DNR is a great resource for launches and lake info. They have printable accurate lake maps as well.

The only lakes on the West side of the Twin Cities that charge a ramp fee are Medicine Lake and Lake Independence since the public ramps are located inside Three River's Park District land.

We spend most of our time on Long Lake (in the town of Long Lake). It is near Lake Minnetonka and is good for skiing and wakeboarding.

I live in Plymouth and frequent Lake Minnetonka, Medicine Lake, Lake Independence in addition to Long Lake. Let me know if you have any questions.

I used to live on Lake Sarah, moved down to the Mound area, and now ski Dutch lake, and frequent Long Lake. I like to ski the quiet lakes with no other boats, i'm also 1/4 mile from Minnetonka for when we just want to cruise. the west side is very fun and has tons of lakes you can choose from depending on wind direction.
