351c with holley

Just bought my first MC. 1982 SS.

It smokes a little(rich). It hesitates out of the hole, but pulls hard out of the water at full throttle, once the boat planes out, it sputters at full throttle untill i bring it back to 3/4 throttle. Max speed is 34mph right now, i was expecting 45. I have tried to dial the holley adj but the same happens only sooner or it effects my top speed. Now that i have been screwing with the carb its been back firing. Should i fuel inject the damn thing?

I am looking for a kind soul to offer me up a check list of things to do(best) or send me to a thread that has addressed this.

Things that have been done(other than above)
-Rebuilt Holley last season no altitude change since rebuild
-new powerslot tranny
-clean fuel cell
-new dist coil and wires last season
-previous owner used it at the same lake in denver (5280ft)

Congrats on purchasing a great boat and welcome to Team Talk.

For starters, your engine is a 351 Windsor.

To remedy what sounds like a rich situation, I would hit the basics first:
Check spark plugs...might be pretty black by now.
Do you still have points.......if so confirm correct dwell - don't rely on point gap
Confirm choke opening fully by 90 seconds
Turn mixture screw in until lightly seated and count number. Should be close to 1 1/2 turns
Confirm base timing at 10 degrees or whatever spec says
Clean flame arrestor.

With all that done, I suspect that you have too rich a power valve in your carb. Should be 2.5 though some carb numbers spec a power valve closer to 5.0

excellent. Thanks!
Someone at the lake said the back fire may have caused me to need to replace a power valve gasket or something along those lines, he stated it was only a couple bucks but if it back fired they most likely need to be replaced. Sound right?

If really rich at part throttle, as others have said, probably a power valve problem. Backfiring can damage the powervalves and good idea to put the holly powervalve backfire preventer kit in to prevent damaging another one (there are posts on the forum that show how to do this).

Fix that first then see if still causing to not run well at full throttle. you will need to determine whether it is running rich or lean at full throttle too rich, and you may need to put smaller main jets (available through most speed shops or online) or go the other way if too lean . What main jets to you currently have in it?

When purchasing a used boat, there are always a period of figuring out what the heck the previous owners did. My boat came with an automotive carb. If you post a pic of yours, it might help. Besides, we all like pictures here,
