2004 Indmar MCX 5.7 timing?

Just finishing installing a new engine in my '04 XStar (5.7 Chevy Vortec / 350 MCX), I wanted to know how to setup the timing? I've read in a few places that you need to plug in some software, but not sure if that's true for my ignition. The boat has a distributor but no crank position sensor. It says in the manual to set the timing to 10 degrees BTDC at 1,000 RPM, but how do I stop the advance (I guess that has something to do with the plug in lead that came with the new distributor)?

I should add when I did the initial engine install I set 10 degrees timing, the engine runs fin, I just want to make sure it's set right when running with a timing light.

If someone could post the steps it would be a great help.

Cheers

Adrian
