Boat Lift Bunk Carpet/Rubber

I am replacing the boards on my boathouse lift and was wondering about covering them with carpet or rubber. In asking friends, some have said that the plain wood is fine and the carpet/rubber is more aesthetic than protective. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

What's on them now? Not sure I've ever seen rubber before. Where would you get that? I'd go carpet for looks and protection. It's cheap and easy. I did my trailer bunks last year - 4 of them.
