Carburetor issues 1992 Prostar

Have a 92 Prostar with the 351 HO that is giving me problems. Boat starts and runs great up to (what I think is) the second set of barrels kicking in. As long as I run the boat at less than 3/4 throttle the boat runs normal and idles well. When I go over 3/4 throttle the boat begins to back off. Boat will run in the high 30's MPH as is, but any throttle past about 3/4 throttle causes the boat to bog down. Suggestions?

to me sounds like it's flooding at high rpm's, maybe time to rebuild the carburetor

I'm on the other end on this and guessing that the secondary diaphragm is bad and not allowing the secondaries to open. Could be a float or needle&seat issue as well. I would open up (or remove) the doghouse and check for secondary function.

Just an update. I don't have time to diagnose myself, so I found a local carb guy that has been doing this for 40 years and he is going to rebuild my 4010 for $150 (Parts alone from Ski-Dim were $70). Dropped it off this morning and he said he'll get the parts over night and hopes to have it back to me tomorrow afternoon. Won't be long until these guys aren't around any longer. Tried the local MC dealer first and he was honest that they just don't do much carb work any more and suggested I find someone that does.

I know....I know

But I can't come off of $600 at this point given how well the boat has run with the current carb. I'll give it one shot at a rebuild and if this doesn't work a 4160 will be in order quick. Vacation coming in a couple weeks and I don't want to be messing with this issue at that point.

Most of the boat dealers here in DFW told me PCM was advising not to rebuild 4010s, and to advise customers to buy 4160s. I had the same opinion as you did above before I invested in a 4160.

I know where you are coming from, it is close to $600 for a new 4160 and fuel line. I rebuilt my 4010 when I bought my '92 PS205 last year (~$50) and it never performed that great. I recently bought a freshly rebuilt marine 4160 for $200, added a braided stainless fuel line ($40) and only needed to add a bigger accel pump squirter to fine tune it ($20). For $260 I have a MUCH better performing carb and will sell the 4010 to offset some of the cost. Just food for thought.
