'03 Dash Assembly

Don't know how they were in years prior or after 2003, but the dash on my '03 X-30 is held in place by allen screws with wing nuts. Easy to take off, but try to snake your hand up through all the wires and stuff to place a washer and wingnut on the screw from the backside! Poor design in my opinion. Now someone tell me an easier way....

BTW, I was trying to get to the wires for my depth finder. When I hook my pos and neg battery cables from the starter to my battery, the depth finder lights up. Nothing s/b pulling power from this connection since the starter is the only thing connected to the battery. Should it?
