trimming the shaft?

So I had to get a replacement for the drive shaft in my 1990 Prostar. Because the coupler was so rusted, I had to cut the old shaft. I also wasnt able to get an accurate measurement on the shaft and so the one I got is about a 1/4 in too long in the threads at the coupler end. When I went to bolt it up to my transmission, the output shaft of the transmission came in contact with the end of the driveshaft and the couplers were not touching. What should I do?

A. Cut the shaft down by about 1/4in ?
B. Have a stainless or aluminum spacer machined to make up the difference?
C. Other ideas?

Im not following. Is it a single or dual taper? Looks like a single taper, in which case, it appears as though you simply installed your coupler on too far?

If the couplers were to mate properly, what is your spacing between the end of the strut and the front of the prop hub?
