Boom Set Up on Pre-87 Mastercraft

Greetings all,

I finally got the new to me '86 Mastercraft home and I'm starting to sort out all of the issues and next steps with this fantastic old boat. After assembling the B.I. Boom I noticed that there was some flex in the gunnel while just supporting the weight of the boom itself. I can only imagine how much flex there will be when my kids or I are hanging off the end. There are a few very fine gel stress cracks where the boom crosses the gunnel with the boom angled forward (not far from the window frame). The boat came with the boom. It has no doubt seen plenty of use over the years. Has anyone had any issues with gunnel damage? Do people brace the gunnel to support the stress? Maybe this is a sign that MCOCD is starting to kick in.

The B.I. boom is complete with a height adjuster and gunnel saver.

Thanks ahead of time.

Wrap a towel around the boom where it contacts the gunnel and make sure the boom is at a 90 degree angle from the boat. (adjust cable length)

Your boat should be solid enough for an adult footer to not cause any flex to the gunnel so a kid should be no problem at all.

Post pics of your stress cracks (post pics of your boat itselfs, sounds sweet!)

If you are worried - a flat board of any type should futher spread load on the gunnel. At risk of being ugly.

Sorry guys, for now the boat is being stored at another location (heated garage nestled between Mustangs and Harley Davidsons). At the moment I only have weekend visitation! I'll take some pictures this weekend and bring you up to speed.

Cheers

PLR,

I have a friend with an 84' and his also does the same. At the p[oint of contact where the clear protective sleeve contacts the boat the gunwale has flex. It's fine when not under load but when you pulled down on it you could see flex. I have never seen this and have what I would call a lot of experience with the same set up.

Thanks Covi. No flex at all in yours...hmm. Has the '84 owner done anything to combat the issue or is that just something he has learned to live with? The gunnel on this vintage of boat isn't C channel like the '87which provides more rigidity. The gunnel also narrows before the window frame where it meets the seat cushion. It just looks a little flimsy. Hey, it's lasted this long.

I'm officially a fool. Only excited newbees set up a boom on a trailer. Bound to be some flex when the boat can't role as it would in the water. That's the latest thought anyway.

Don't feel bad. We all sit in our boats and make motor noises when no one is around too, newbie or not. There aren't too many guys on here that say they have never done that, and the one's that make that claim are full of, well - you know...........
