Mystery box behind dash in '88 Prostar

Can anyone tell me what this little black box is for which is located behind (inside) the dash? See attached pic.

I also am having some issues with the lights on the toggle switches. It appears that I have an intermittent connection somewhere. Any suggestions? The boat is an 88 so my guess it is a bad connection somewhere. Now that I have the panel out when I wiggle the panel with all of the switches that little lights go on and off.

Thanks for any help.

I'd agree, see if the wiring in any way relates to the temp gauge.

For the lights, I'd start by looking for a grounding problem. I have found that intermittent electrical is more often than not the last thing I remember to check (ground).
