Stuck oil filter

Any idea how to get stuck oil filter off? Strap wrench slips. Channel lock locking wrench is starting to crush the filter. This is exactly what happened last time, except I have ripped the filter in half trying the screw driver method. I broke down and took it to a shop last time this happened. Filter is a Bosch 3322.

Can you get the channel locks on the top edge of the oil filter?

You're probably over tightening filter when replacing. Silly question - but have to ask - are you lubing the rubber gasket prior to installation?

Piece of sandpaper inside of the filter wrench. Just stick it in there and clamp down on it for the turn...

Do not tighten new filter beyond snug tight with your hand. Maybe a slight turn with the wrench but nothing that warrants any tight fit. No need for it...

you need the socket style that slips over your filter.

This is a "stop" "put down the tools"

go buy the slip over wrench, that goes on a breaker bar and use it.

ALso in future - yes lube the o-ring and put it on by hand and don't grunt on it

I love this style. Taken many a stuck filter off with it and you can use it at several angles making it easier to get it in tough spaces.

Very cool......nice find Mike.

I have seen people take a filter completely apart and use channel locks on the outside of the threaded insert on the filter.

Same advice as above for re-installation: light film of oil (dip your finger in the drain oil) on the filter gasket. I always go hand tight with the filter. Never more than a 1/4 turn beyond hand tight. Never had a problem getting a filter off.
