Updated steering on 85 S&S

Need to replace steering cable on 85 S&S. how hard is this job ? or do i need to upgrade to newer style steering cable ?

Not difficult at all. Be sure to check the cable length which is stamped into the cable housing at the rudder end of the cable. Same style cable from SKIDIM will get the job done.

If it's original it's probably a Steermaster system.

Tie then wrap in tape the new one to the old, pulling the new one through as you pull the old out. Use a little Locktight on the rear retaining nut.

If you still have the original Steermaster system, then you are better off replacing the helm and cable using the kit from SKIDIM. Price was not bad, around $160 for everything. The results were amazing and totally cured my hard steer problem on my '85. Just tell them what you have and they will suggest the right length and helm. I did mine last year just before summer. Was steering perfect when I sold the boat last October. I looked into trying to find the original cables but could not find them.

thanks everyone just ordered new cables and had to get a new helm and wheel because old ones are not avail any more..

Did that on my boat a couple of years ago. Not a bad job at all.
