Anyone else have tire come off on the highway
So went to pick up my FiRST Mastercraft in orlando,Fl today 1985 Stars and stripes. put new rims and tires on the boat to haul it back to tampa and get 5 miles down the road and what do you know there goes the left wheel splitting over 3 lanes of traffic.. lol and my trailer dragging on the ground.. Sucked at first but what can you do. So the threads on the Hub pulled all but 1 of them out.. So had the boat flat bed back to a house close.. should i just replace the axle might be tweaked or is there just a new hub that can be replaced on both sides with the studs mushroomed on the back like most hubs today any info would be appreciated but though id give a laugh to everyone..

Well... Congrats on your first MasterCraft! Sorry about your misfortune the first time towing it.
I'm not laughing, but I'm glad your ok with it. I guess someone didn't double check the lug nuts on that side? Good thing things didn't go too far south! I doubt you need to replace the whole axle. A new hub is probably all that's needed. Oh... and welcome to Team Talk. Edit... you may get away with just replacing the studs if it's just the threads messed up from the wheel dragging on them. If the hub bearings are ok, just drive out the studs and get new ones.

Unless the axle is damaged, I'd replace just the hub assembly...
Salt corrosion on the studs? Just asking for the sake of mention of potential salt related issues elsewhere.

Most times a tire/wheel assembly comes off it's from either not properly torquing the wheel, or from not seating the wheel squarely and not tightening the lugs in a star pattern. It is definitely an exciting experience.

Thanks everyone and yes im laughing But yes I DO KNOW HOW TO TORQUE A TIRE and in the correct pattern and specifically double checked hub as much as i could with what was at my disposal.. the two sided threaded studs just pulled right out of the hub. the trailer does have rust from sitting a WHILE about 6 years of what old owner stated.. Jim will be calling you tomorrow to see what we can do.. but the worry is same age of trailer and type of studs.

Used boats and trailers are always full of surprises. And just when you think you have found all of them, another one surfaces.

Been there and done that...I feel your pain. Nice thing was (and you should look into this) the shop that just had my wheels off paid for the repairs as they forgot to tighten the bolts on this one. Different for me as I have the dual axle so at least the trailer didn't drop to the ground.
I think they replaced the hub rather than just trying to replace the studs. And the fender, wheel and tire ![]() |
