Obd Ii Reader
Can we use a regular Automotive Code scanner with our marine engines or are those different? I got a flyer from, yes Harbor Freight, they have a basic one on sale for $40.00. I'm wondering if that would work for my 1998 5.7 Chevy Vortec EFI engine.

No it won't. Your boat uses MEFI, but I can't remember what generation. Needless to say, an automotive code reader won't work. Use the search function on here, there are several threads discussing it.

Gotta ask.....What is MEFI. I don't have much success with the search function either. Could you enlighten me? Or at least point me in the right direction?

Sometimes the obvious is just too close to see it. Let us know if you find something that works.

There are two scanners I saw on line. I'm on my way out of the house at the moment. Maybe someone will chime in and find the thread I'm thinking of. One of them was a bit pricey (big bucks) the other was doable ( I believe around $30.00+ or so). At any rate my question was answered...Can't use the automotive scanner.
Thanks to all of you for your input. ![]() |
